Sending money out of Brazil

Most international wires leave Brazil as SWIFT transfers, meaning your bank charges a flat fee, the FX desk takes a spread, and a correspondent bank on the other end may deduct a further charge before delivery. Sending money abroad through Ruvo converts at around 1% all in with 0% IOF, so more of each payment reaches its destination.

Receiving dollars in Brazil

Freelancers, remote workers and exporters who receive dollars in Brazil typically wait days for a SWIFT credit and then pay again at the FX conversion. With your own US account number you keep the dollars, convert when the rate suits you, and access reais by Pix the same day.

Cross-border payments you might not have expected

Some cross-border needs are less obvious. Foreigners living in Brazil need a way to pay by Pix without a local bank account. Families supporting students in the US face tuition and living costs that stack IOF on top of an expensive FX rate when paid through a Brazilian bank or platform. Travellers buying dollars at a câmbio booth pay the dólar turismo spread every time. Both have lower-cost paths: paying for US university expenses and buying dollars for a US trip.

Pix, ACH, wire and crypto: the main rails

The rail you use determines cost, speed and what the recipient receives. Pix is instant within Brazil, free on Ruvo, and works for personal and business accounts. ACH connects to US bank accounts directly — faster than SWIFT and cheaper. SWIFT wire reaches almost any bank in the world but typically takes 2–3 business days and often carries a fee at the receiving bank. Sending via USDT or USDC to a crypto wallet is the fastest option for international transfers — typically settled in minutes with no intermediary fee beyond the network fee.

How long each transfer takes

Pix is instant. ACH to a US bank account settles in 1–2 business days. SWIFT wires typically arrive in 2–3 business days, though intermediary banks can add a day. Crypto transfers settle in minutes once confirmed on the network. Receiving dollars into your Ruvo account from a US ACH or wire typically arrives the same or next business day. For urgent payments, crypto or same-day Pix are the most reliable options.

Holding versus converting right away

Converting every dollar to reais the moment it arrives is rarely the best strategy. Holding a dollar balance lets you convert when the rate is favourable, pay international expenses directly without a round-trip conversion, or send abroad without first repatriating. Ruvo lets you hold a dollar balance indefinitely at no cost. When you do convert, the rate applies at the time of the conversion — not when the money arrived. Most people find a rhythm of converting enough to cover monthly reais expenses and holding the rest.

Talk to support
  • Sending means you move money out of Brazil — converting reais to dollars and wiring them abroad. Receiving means someone outside Brazil sends dollars to your US account, which you hold or convert to reais. Both directions work from the same Ruvo balance.

  • IOF (Imposto sobre Operações Financeiras) is a Brazilian tax on financial transactions. Most international card purchases and SWIFT transfers trigger IOF at 3.5%. Ruvo uses a digital-dollar mechanism classified differently by the Banco Central, so IOF is 0% on conversions, card spending and receiving. It is not a waiver — the rate genuinely does not apply to these operations.

  • Receiving dollars: instant to same-day depending on whether the sender uses ACH, RTP or SWIFT wire. Sending out via RTP or ACH: typically minutes to same-day. SWIFT wires: 1 to 3 business days. Pix payouts in Brazil: instant, 24/7 including holidays.

  • Yes. Your Ruvo balance works in all directions: receive dollars by ACH or wire, convert between reais and dollars, spend on the card abroad, send internationally by wire or ACH, and pay in Brazil by Pix — all from one account.

  • Limits depend on your account type (personal or business) and verification level. Basic limits are set at account opening and increase with additional verification steps. Contact Ruvo support or check the app for the current limits on your account.
